Supernatural Compilation

Beatrice Leanza , independent curator and co founder of Bao Atelier asked us to do a compilation for her show "Supernatural" which opens on September 10th at Shanghai Rock Bund museum.We said : Si! of course!

The compilation is a mix of old Chinese pop songs from different decades, (mainly 30's and 80's) blended with original western tunes ranging from ambient to avant garde pieces of yesterday and today. enjoy the tracklist!

JAVA was founded in 1999 around FIXI (accordeon, keyboards, compositions) and R.WAN (vocals, lyrics). Their first album, ""Hawaï" (SonyBMG) — released in 2000 — met with great success (selling more than 70,000 copies).

BISTROL BANTO (drums) and PEPOUSEMAN (bass) joined up the combo, and the venture hit the road. After a live recording in 2001 ("Java sur Seine"), their second album, "Safari Croisière" was released in 2003. It was partially recorded in Brazil. Hundreds of concerts, major festivals (Vieilles Charrues, Printemps de Bourges...) and a few trips abroad later (Australia, Brazil, China, Spain...), JAVA decided to part from their record company, SONY.

Mutual incompatibility, divergence of opinion... Then began a period of personal projects for all.

R.WAN released two solo albums (Radio Cortex 1 and 2) in 2006 and 2008. During this time, Bistrol Banto joined him on stage. Meanwhile, Fixi toured with Tony Allen and in 2006, prompted an encounter with Winston McAnuff and Java on the album "Paris Rockin’" (Makasound). A tour comprising about a hundred dates followed.

After a whole year of hard work, Java finally bring out their third album, "Maudit Français" (2T3M/Makasound/Pias).

1998年，Java因为两位巴黎人的相逢而诞生：作曲家Fixi和作词家R.wan。他们参加过不同的音乐组合，最终让他们有了相同的发现：在法国，我们缺少可以从中吸取灵感并创作自己音乐的民间音乐参照。我们必须寻找根源或者创造根源。Fixi决定从手风琴着手。他像美国流行音乐人选择爵士唱片一样挑选了老风笛唱片样板。R.wan着手打造语言，希望创造出以周边氛围为依托的独特环境：巴黎。他们一起创作了很多歌曲，融会了嘻哈乐、手风琴、风笛特有的节奏、过去的乐器及现代的声音。他们调制出自己的配方，使用了来自摇滚、说唱乐、法国香颂、非洲音乐、电子音乐的素材。

Bistrol Banto（打击乐）和Pépouseman（低音）从草创时期就加入了组合。2000年，Java出版了第一部专辑：Hawai；2001年完成一台现场实录：塞纳河上的Java；2003年出版第二部专辑：巡游（部分在巴西完成）。2008年，Java在K-Mille的指挥下重新走上录音棚之路，并完成一部新专辑（Jean Lamoot录音合成）：Maudit Français于2009年4月由Makasound发行。

Matthieu Chedid is a singer-songwriter of French rock, better known under his pseudonym -M- Primarily a guitarist; -M- is a multi-instrumentalist in the studio where he records almost all of the parts himself. This unusual artist with a high-pitched voice and colourful imagination is the grandson of the poet Andrée Chedid but moreover creator of a unique world, where black and white world, brightness and darkness never ceases to oscillate.

For his new album “Mister Mystere”, Mathieu Chedid collaborated with Brigitte Fontaine, George Kretek and Hocine Merabet for the lyrics, his younger brother, Joseph, for some of the music, his sister Anna for the female vocals and Louis Chedi, his father, for mixing.

From the start, Zenzile is having fun mixing the same influences (post punk, Dub,folk,soft rock,soul jazz) with a savvy sense of measuring them all out, in order to produce a unique album every time. For their new album Pawn Shop, the Angevins (from Angers) have deliberately let their POP spirit opened up, in an humble and formal way of course.Only two tracks are exclusively instrumental and are welcome signs of a previous life. All eight other tracks are carried by the voices of olds partners: Jamika Ajalon et David K. Alderman (Warehouse), demonstrating some new and unexpected sides of their talent.This eighth studio album is less angular and more confident than the previous Living in Monochrome in which the band had let the guitar lead out.Today Zenzile seems to have found the right balance between staying simple while being demanding.Strings and organs are more present than ever to form melodies never dared before.Evidently freed from any past inhibitions, the band now sweats out many old legendary Vinyl albums, reminiscent of their teen age years. Shadowy organs, bony guitars, ramping bass, Bela Lugosi spirit glides above Pawn Shop. There are also lingering feverish memories of ESG, Pink Floyd, Nick Cave or PIL but everything is digested and sublimated only to be more accomplished.

The City of Helsinki will host a series of club nights reflecting the city's vibrant music scene with an amazing line-up. The jazz, metal and electronic clubs will take place in association with the events of Shanghai World Expo's Finland Day on the 27th May in various venues across the city.

Hel YES - Dada, Logo and Anar 27th of May

The after party to the Expo’s Finland day 27th of May will be organized at at Xingfu Road clubs Dada, Anar where the reasons behind the current hype experienced by the Finnish electronic music scene can be witnessed first-hand and Logo in the company of Jimi Tenor, Villa Nah, Top Billin, Renaissance Man, Jori Hulkkonen, Clouds and Desto.

The flamboyant figure of Jimi Tenor blends influences from psychedelic soul, jazz, experimental rock, Afro-American music and electronica to create an unexpected mixture of funky pop fusion. Jori Hulkkonen has been spreading his distinctive blend of house and techno since the debut 12" in 1993, more recently with hit 'Sunglasses at Night' featuring Tiga. Top Billin crew's energetic and loud live shows have filled dancefloors from Paris to New York and Villa Nah synthpop embraces both the cold sound of the synthesizer and the romantic sentiments of the vocals with Clouds and Desto adding their distinctive brands of dubstep to the evenings versatile line-up. Hel Yes is produced in collaboration with Antidote.

The Artists

Jimi Tenor

Musician and composer Jimi Tenor has never settled for the traditional role of a pop artist. He is known as a productive musician whose work lies beyond current trends, and also as a performer who combines the finest elements of afro-american music, spontaneous silliness and shameless glamour in an original way. Besides being a professional musician for almost 20 years, Jimi Tenor (born Lassi Lehto, 1965, Lahti, Finland) has also practised photography, directed short films and designed clothes and musical instruments. Tenor's music, along with his design and technical innovations, springs from experimental rock. His first

recording band Jimi Tenor & His Shamans (1986-1992) was influenced by the early 80s industrial rock, where instruments were made out of scrap metal and plastic. Later during the 90s Tenor moved first towards electronic music, but soon got closer to his roots: 60s and 70s jazz, psychedelic soul and African funk. Although Tenor spent all of the 90s in Berlin, New York, London and Barcelona, his artistic approach was typically Finnish: technically practical, but saturated with black humour and a national romantic tone. So he was quite at home all over Europe in front of a crowd gone wild, wearing a glittering self-designed costume and

a flowing cape, holding a noise-producing device the main components of which were a walkman made in Hong Kong and an East-German bicycle dynamo, performing a song about ancient Finnish forest gods, sounding like a mixture of Gil Evans, Jimi Hendrix and Fela Kuti.

Today Jimi Tenor is an established European artist who operates outside the mainstream. His audience consists of clubbers and alternative rock enthusiasts looking for new perspective, but also of jazz and funk rebels. Those who understand that even unconventional pop music can move your body and heart.

Renaissance Man

Breakout stars of 2009, duo Renaissance Man's style of minimal house music that mixes ethnic/world samples has been wowing the crowds at clubs and festivals around the world. Band members Jaxxon and Downtown began their musical collaboration in 2008 with a monthly club night NOW! in Helsinki and since late 2008 have released their own material and several remixes for other acts.

Debut Spraycan was released on Switch’s Dubsided in early 2009, followed by Rhythm on the Kitsuné Maison 7 compilation. A subsequent EP on Parisian label Sound Pellegrino launched title track What Is Guru as one of the year’s underground hits, making Renaissance Man highly sought-after remixers for the likes of Brodinski, Crystal Fighters, Health, Le Corps Mince de Françoise… Original tracks and remixes have seen support from fellow DJ’s including Diplo, Annie Mac, Claude Von Stroke, Tiga, Jesse Rose…

This rollercoaster success has led to some serious thumbing of Renaissance Man passports with gigs across four continents in major clubs (Social Club/Paris, Hive/Zurich, WMF/Berlin) and festivals (Stereosonic/Australia, Les Transardentes/Belgium, Igloofest/Montreal). The mayhem looks set to continue in 2010 with at least two new records, including an EP on the Made to Play Label, remixes for The Very Best, Solo and The Crookers, plus numerous international shows in prestigious venues including Fabric and Panorama Bar. Who knows, that elusive Renaissance Man album might even make its appearance…

Taking their inspiration from 3000 years of art and science, Renaissance Man prove that you can think out of the box, but that it’s even better to think outside the walls. Or make that borders.

Jori Hulkkonen

Finland's Jori Hulkkonen has never been the one to paint himself in the corner. With releases in the last two decades exploring 360 degrees on the musical radar, he's been hailed as "the most underrated producer in the world", "living legend of electronic composition" and "music's best kept secret".

Since the debut 12" in 1993, ten artist albums for F communications and more recently Turbo recordings, collaborations with people as verstaile as John Foxx, Jose Gonzales, Jesper Dahlbäck (as Kebacid) and Phonogenic (as Discemi), dozens of 12" singles on some of the world's hottest labels, and close to a hundred remixes for artists as diverse as Chromeo, Kid Cudi, Robyn, and Lydia Lunch, followed by producing albums for the bands Sister Flo and Villa Nah, and naturally the writing and production work on both Tiga -albums, all qualify as self-explanatory efforts of a passionate music aficionado. And that's excluding the sideprojects.

Eversince the mid 90's Jori has travelled across the globe and played hundreds of clubs and festivals from Australia to Zurich -and every alphabet inbetween -spreading the vibe with his unique blend of house and techno, fuelled by insatiable curiosity about the music's future and profound understanding of its past.

Clouds

Clouds is a Finnish electronic music production team consisting of Tommi Liikka and Samuli Tanner. Championed by people like Joe Nice, Geiom, Skream, N-Type, L-Wiz, Dj/Rupture, Mary Anne Hobbs and Tes La Rok, The Clouds sound is like a soundtrack to the invasion of earth by little and green, but dubwise, aliens. It’s a fresh take on the standards of dubstep, combining elements from video games, experimental music and hip-hop with deep melodic meditations and dancefloor-shredding basslines. Always keeping it fresh, Clouds tracks rarely tread a path they’ve previously stepped on. “Under The Dancing Feet” has been an absolute phenomenon in the dubstep scene, tearing it up in the dance worldwide, garnering support from all the top DJ’s from a variety of genres, including plays on Radio 1 experimental. With catchy vocals, melodic rhythms and pummelling bass this is surely the kind of tune to propel dubstep further into the mainstream.

Top Billin

Fifteen thousand screaming fans, speakers banging loud as thunder, fireworks and pyrotechnics flying in the air like it’s new year’s eve. Four dudes in tight leather pants, stroking power chords from stratocasters and blasting double bass drums… Oh wait, that was Van Halen at the San Diego Sports Arena in 1981. Never mind that…

But Top Billin are equally hot. In fact – the DJ collective consisting of guys named Sir Nenis, Fiskars and Flipperi, Anonymous, J-Laini & Tane Lee, Top Billin is the closest thing to club phenomenon ever to come from Finland. Ask anybody. While others talk the talk, they walk the damn walk. In 2006 Top Billin made themselves a household name in Helsinki with bootleg remixes, hot mixtapes and a monthly club night that was packed every single time from the beginning. Then came the first 12” ep and after that nothing was the same. That record became the number one selling item at Turntablelab.com, and favored by club dj’s and party music lovers around the world.

Top Billin has become a well oiled party machine, rocking shows around the globe from Paris to Berlin and Moscow to New York, with the likes of Justice, Sany Pitbull,Feadz and countless other club favorites. In 2008 they even made their first big tour supporting M.I.A. in

Canada Their hometown club night in Helsinki has hosted international guests like Scottie B, DJ Sega, DJ Ayres, Tittsworth, Cosmo Baker, Paul Devro and many others.

The duo consisting of Juho Paalosmaa and Tomi Hyyppä, the newcomerVilla Nah has already acquired a following among electronic music lovers with soundscapes that recall the haunting synthpop of the eighties and embrace both the cold sound of the synthesizer and the romantic sentiments of the vocals. One of the most eagerly awaited debut albums of 2010, Villa Nah's 'Origin' was released in March.

Three Shadows and Thinking Hands are proud to present the launch of the first annual Caochangdi PhotoSpring on April 17th, 2010. The Caochangdi PhotoSpring is working in a three-year partnership with Les Rencontres d’Arles Photography Festival. This will be the very first time that Arles’ programs will be shown outside of France.

For the past forty years, Les Rencontres d’Arles has been the meeting point of photography artists, professionals, and amateurs alike, who come to the southern French city to discover the new talents of photography and rediscover its celebrated masters.

The Caochangdi art district was born in northeastern Beijing in 2000 and has since flourished into a vibrant artistic hub with numerous galleries, art institutions, and artists’ studios. The aim of the Caochangdi PhotoSpring is to build a platform for photography in the art district through an annual event where photographers, photography collectors and the public can meet to have access to high quality works. For the first time, twenty Caochangdi galleries will join forces to celebrate photography from China and abroad with Caochangdi PhotoSpring.

The launch of the 2010 Caochangdi PhotoSpring will take place from April 17th through 21st. During this week of festivities, each of the partnering Caochangdi galleries will host different activities, such as exhibition openings, lectures, evening concerts, documentary film screenings, and slideshows. The opening week of the 2010 Caochangdi PhotoSpring will also feature the announcement of the 2010 Three Shadows Photography Award winner, the presentation of the 2009 Discovery Award of Arles Laureate, a symposium on Photography: Creativity vs. the Market, artist open studios, as well as portfolio reviews by a panel of international photography professionals. Visitors will have the opportunity to meet with photography professionals from China and abroad. All events will be open to the public.

Caochangdi PhotoSpring is part of the 2010 Croisements Festival, presented in partnership with the French Embassy in China and curated jointly by Thinking Hands Culture and the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre. Yeah yeah yeah! May is here, let’s bounce! Festivals and gigs just bloom across the country, artists and promoters get busy and 86/33 LINK and YUGONGYISHAN won’t fail in their obligations.
In May we bring you two week ends of concentrated music proteins, a whole line up which is going to travel from Beijing to the European square on the site of the Shanghai expo!
We’ll be starting on May 6th with multi awarded French singer OLIVIA RUIZ and her band who are going to perform a new genre of “chanson” in the same spirit as Keren Ann,
followed on the 7th by the explosive electro funk superstar EBONY BONES hailing from London with her voodoo groves and her DIY multicolour outfits.
Then on May 12th, Swedish singer and composer PETER VON POEHL will grant us with his textured acoustic folk and we will finish the series on the 13th with a peak of “Balkan-Gypsy” frenzy delivered by French artist CLICK and his multi cultural ORCHESTRA!

Here's the piece we did for Bed Bar.It's on the corridor that connects the front and the back yard. We used their motto "Let's go to Bed" and turned it into a carnival of soft and kinky letters. It's a bit cartonnish, funny.

Celebrating the 60th anniversary of PRC"

On the 1st of October , i was seating in front of my TV set in my Beijing new appartment at 10 AM sharp. I didn't want to miss the military parade of the 60th anniversary of PRC and i knew the only way to watch it in optimimum conditions was to watch it on TV , as the whole area surrounding the Fordidden city, Tian An Men square and Chang An Avenue were solidly blocked. Living in Beijing in the last decade, i was supposed to witness extraordinary events of the Chinese current booming history, but as for the Olympic Games, this 60th anniversary celebration made me think again that in China you're always a far away witness, spectacular events happen next to you, as if there were in another dimension that common people will never reach. So here's a selection of my best photo shots of the parade i took from the TV set !
