86/33 LINK is a non-profit organization registered in Paris promoting music and organizing events in China, France and Europe. 86 refers to the international code for China and 33 is the code for France, which explains the main objective of the organization: to link up the two countries by creating a platform for independent musicians and by providing professional expertise to companies or institutions seeking information and guidance on Chinese cultural and music business.
From 2004 to 2006 , 86/33 link created and managed a music department inside the French Embassy operating under the name of Bureau des Musiques Actuelles (BMA), focusing on developing the presence of French artists and productions throughout China.
During the French Cultural Year in China (2005), 86/33 LINK–BMA was the main coordinator of the Trans Musicales Festival, a special edition of the well known festival that takes place in Rennes every year since 30 years. It was the first highly anticipated outdoor event (7 bands and 8 DJ’s on 2 days) showcasing the diversity of French productions in China. The festival took place in Chaoyang Park (currently the site of the Beijing Pop Festival) and featured acts as St Germain, Gotan Project, and DJ Missill among others. 86/33 link still acts as a major music/event consultant for the French Embassy and collaborates on yearly events such as the Francophonie concerts in March, the Croisement(s) Festival in May and so on.
Meanwhile, our activities have expanded to collaborations with other European countries such as Finland with whom they have been collaborating since four years on different projects such as: Sounds like Suomi tour, a touring project introducing the most cutting edge and innovative Finnish artists to the Chinese audience in all major towns in the country, and Night On earth: a mobile exhibition.
We also collaborate as a music organizer for festivals in Beijing such as DIAF in 2004, 2005, 2006; the Borderline Moving Images Festival in 2007, thus creating innovative events crossing the borders between music and other art mediums.
In Beijing, 86/33 link always keeps close ties with the local scene. We were involved in the programming of local live house Yugong Yishan and in the editing of YugongYishan’s free magazine: Beijing Under Construction (BUC). We also operate as a promotional platform for Chinese artists such as: Wanglei, Dead J, Chen Xiongwei, DFU and record label Shanshui.
